Sale Lot/Reference
Group Description:
Title:
Lot 145 "SUBSEQUENTLY PAID" ENDORSEMENT OF DUNCANS P.O., ETC.; 3rd Feb. 1850 EL from "Duncans Post Office" to Madeira per "Packet" with a fine "DUNCANS/JAMAICA" c.d.s. (2nd March!) across the flap, with the extraordinary black m/s endorsement; "This letter was put in the office without its being paid for and without any knowledge of the person, otherwise the postage would have been exacted. H.B.", on the front beside a black m/s "1/6". Clearly the sender was tracked down and the postage paid.
Key Words:
Jamaica "PAID" AND "FREE" MARKS
Description:
The later markings therefore include; red m/s "Subsequently paid. Hy. B., P(ost). M(aster)." alongside the charge on the front, transit "PAID" marks of Kingston & London, and the arrival charge of "160" (Portuguese Reis). An exceptional and possibly unique instructional marking; the first of its kind that we have seen. PHOTO
