Lot 307 THE 1S-1D RATE COVER TO ITALY WITH AN ILLEGAL 1D BLUE BISECT; Extraordinary 23rd July 1876 EL to Genoa with a 1/- dull brown, a 1d blue and a diagonally bisected 1d blue all tied by indistinct Old Harbour "A61" numerals with a faint matching c.d.s. alongside; the 1/- & complete 1d are also tied by a red "LONDON/PAID" transit c.d.s. Also on the front is a faint Kingston "MORE TO PAY" (Foster D1a but 9 years later than recorded) and a red crayon "1/-". It seems that the correct rate was

1s-1d, but that there was a shortage of the d claret in the Old Harbour P.O., and whereas Kingston did not approve of the bisect, neither London nor the Italian P.O. raised any charges. Very rare example of a genuine commercial post-1872 bisect that was (albeit wrongly) accepted. (Ex Trivett; this cover was fully illustrated in his 1933 Plumridge's auction catalogue) Very rare and an important Exhibition item. PHOTO
