Lot 31 THE JAMAICA BISHOP MARK - THE "PROVING" COVER WITH "KING/STON" IN MATCHING INK; Fine 21st May 1778 EL from "Halifax, Nova Scotia" carried privately to Jamaica by ship's captain (see contents and accompanying article) and posted locally from Kingston to "John Grant Esqr, Spanish Town, Island of Jamaica", with a red m/s "7" on the front (local inland rate). date digits) beside a fine "KING/STON" (Foster type T1a; 22x12 mm) in a clearly matching brown ink. The filing endorsement also proves once and for all that this is a Jamaican datestamp; it reads "recd. the 28 June". Only a handful of examples of the Jamaican Bishop Mark have been recorded (all after Foster's book was published); this is probably the clearest strike, it is 20 years earlier than the others and is the only example accompanied by a "KING/STON" mark.
