Lot 89 THE VERY RARE BOXED "Savanna La Mar/SHIP LETTER" MARK; 5th Sept. 1848 EL (light toning & mount holes on reverse do not detract) from Salem, N.C. to Mandeville with a fair red Salem c.d.s. and "PAID" on the front, having a lovely strike of the Savanna La Mar Ship Letter mark alongside. (SL8; Foster records one example only, probably this one, for a "Unique" rating; we have recorded only one other less clear strike from this same correspondence). Very attractive Exhibition Piece.
