The United States hosts an international
exhibition every ten years, beginning in
1926. Before 1966 all, including the 1913
show, had been held in New York. For 1966
there was a dispute over what the show
should look like. “Discussions early on
were led by John R. Boker, then President
of ASE (Association for Stamp
Exhibitions), who felt strongly that the it
should be ‘of limited size and top prestige
- obtaining top collections on an
invitational basis and displaying them
under deluxe circumstances.’ Boker felt
that the yearly ASDA New York shows
catered to the ‘popular collector, and the
International should be much more
exclusive.’ So Boker resigned.” This left
George Turner, the prime mover behind
NAPEX in Washington only 18 months to
organise the Washington event.
