2 October 1869 - Derry to HMS Peterel at Sierra Leone.
Carried by SS Calabar departing Liverpool on 5 October 1869.
From June 1869, The African Steam Ship Company increased the number of monthly sailings to three.
As an officer, Captain The Hon. E. Cochrane was allowed to
receive mail at the reduced Officer’s Letter rate of 6d per
half ounce. For mail addressed to Sierra Leone this was an
academic distinction as the ordinary rate was the same!
The postage is paid by a strip of six GB 1d reds, plate 104. HMS Peterel in 1867
Postmarked with Derry 172 duplex (2 Oct 1869), with transit
marks at London Chief Office with bag code ‘L’ for Liverpool
(4 Oct) and Liverpool Packet Letter Office (4 Oct).
