Meter Mail

1954 Franking Machines

The postal services of Sierra Leone were
slowly modernised during the 1950s. One
new initiative was the introduction of meter
mail from June 1954.
The take up was very slow prior to
independence in 1961, with only a handful of
companies using the new facility.
Seven different types of dies have been
recorded, four prior to independence and
three since.
The geographic spread was also very small,
with only one die recorded from outside of
Freetown. This was used in the mining town
of Marampa.
The impressions are always in red ink.
