                        A cover originating on the Isle of Wight with 1 d red tied by the
                          numeral cancel of COWES on 2nd September 1858. On the
                            front is the unframed MISSENT-TO/SOUTHAMPTON

                          STATION struck in blue ink. As the letter was intended for
                           London, mail to the east of the Island would normally be

                           routed through Portsmouth and not Southampton as in this
                            case. Southampton dealt with mail for the north &  west.
