(1810-1839)
A commercial building, the Auction Mart, wasbuild in 1810 and was
designed to secure some ofthe lucrative auction-sale business which had
reached amazing proportions in the City which had hitherto been
conducted largely in the various coffee houses. The Coffee House had a
succession of proprietors: 1822-24 T. Hapgood; 1826-28 P.Hapgood;
John Humphrey 1833-34; and William Baker 1838-39. In 1840 it was
listed as a tavern.

A letter written on 24th July 1832 by ~ohn Whitmore from the Auction
Mart Coffee House to John Walters iJn New Square, Lincolns Inn advising
him that his letter had arrived too lat1 to lodge the Power at the bank but
this will be done the next day. Black boxed T P Chief Office and "2"
handstamps with red oval datestamp.
