Apollo 11 (AS-506) The Eagle Has Landed
Unbelievably the mission planners had scheduled a four-hour sleep period before the first Extra Vehicular
Activity (EVA) on the Moon's surface, but in the event Armstrong and Aldrin called for the moonwalk to
be brought forward. As he descended the ladder, Armstrong reached across to release a small camera to
transmit live pictures to Earth. At the bottom rung he paused, clearly visible to an estimated billion view-
ers, and took the last 3ft (lm) gap in a slow-motion-bound landing with his feet still on the LM's footpad.
'The surface appears to be very, very fine grained as you get close to it; it's almost like a powder. .. Okay,
I'm going to step off the LM now.' And with one foot on the Moon and the other on the footpad he ut-
tered the historic words, 'That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind.'
