~----------t The Apollo Story
Apollo 13 (AS-508) We've Had A Problem
Apollo 13 was the seventh manned mission in the American Apollo space program and the third intended
to land on the Moon. The craft was launched on April 11, 1970, at 13:13 CST from the Kennedy Space
Center but the lunar landing was aborted after an oxygen tank exploded two days later, crippling the ser-
vice module upon which the Command Module depended.
The flight was commanded by James A. Lovell with John L. "Jack" Swigert as Command Module
pilot and Fred W. Haise as Lunar Module pilot. Swigert was a late replacement for the original CM
pilot Ken Mattingly, who was grounded by the flight surgeon after exposure to German measles.
The Apollo 13 crew patch featured three fly-
ing horses as Apollo's 'chariot' across space.
Given Lovell's Navy background, the logo
also included the mottoes "Ex Luna, scien-
tia" ("From the Moon, knowledge"), bor-
rowed from the U.S. Naval Academy's
motto, "Ex scientia tridens" ("From knowl-
edge, sea power"). The mission number ap-
peared in Roman numerals as Apollo XIII. It
is one of two Apollo insignia-the other be-
ing Apollo 11-not to include the names of
the crew. (This was fortunate, considering
that original crew member Ken Mattingly
was replaced two days before the mission
began.) It was designed by artist Lumen
Winter, who based it on a mural he had done
for the St. Regis Hotel in New York. The
mural was later purchased by actor Tom
Hanks, who portrayed Lovell in the movie
Apollo 13, and now is on the wall of a restau-
rant near Chicago owned by Lovell's son.
