The King William Street Pedestrian Priority Project
Impact on Access to Abchurch Lane

A major project will be undertaken during the summer and autumn of 2024 and the first quarter and second half of 2025 covering King William Street, Lombard Street, Cannon Street and many of the lanes that connect them including Abchurch Lane.

This will mean that there will be road closures due to roadworks. Access during these times will be for pedestrians only, with very limited access to vehicles.

Here are the key dates that will affect deliveries and access to the RPSL’s premises. Please note there are more roadworks going on across the ward that may restrict access coming into the area if travelling by car, and all the buses in the area may be on diversions.

Closure of Abchurch Lane:
18 June 2024 to 2 July 2024
21 February 2025 to 7 March 2025

Closure of Lombard Street (also the King William Street dates shown below will affect access to Lombard Street)
2 September 2024 to 13 October 2024

Closure of Cannon Street eastbound (including access to Abchurch Lane)
28 February 2025 to 2 March 2025

Closure of King William Street:
28 February 2025 to 2 March 2025
7 March 2025 to 9 March 2025
14 March 2025 to 16 March 2025
19 September 2025 to 28 September 2025
3 October 2025 to 5 October 2025
26 October 2025 to 28 October 2025

President's Newsletter

The first FIP Show of 2025 starts in Uruguay this weekend, so this February newsletter is coming out a little earlier than usual, because I will be attending as the UK Commissioner and also representing the Royal in South America. The Chairman of our Expert Committee, Chris Harman, will be there to play a leading role in the Expert group, and immediate Past President Peter Cockburn, will also be attending. We hope to meet many members there.

In the last week of this month the ABPS will hold its London National Exhibition at 15 Abchurch Lane from Thursday 27 February to Saturday 1 March. The Thursday is not an RPSL meeting day, and the exhibits will be in the frames for the three days. This year there will be five dealers in attendance led by Bill Barrell, who will also be in Uruguay.

Regional Meetings

Spring also sees an upsurge in Regional Meetings, which is a really important way in which we stay in close touch with our members. I will be endeavouring to attend as many as possible, though sadly not the Wales and Herefordshire Regional meeting in Cardiff on 15 February.

More details of these meetings can be found on the website and in The London Philatelist. I am hoping to attend the forthcoming meetings of the Wessex Region in Salisbury on 25 March and the South West Region in Tiverton on 6 April. The Eastern Region will be meeting at Stowmarket on 29 April and there is the Channel Islands members meeting in Guernsey on 11 April. Please do support these meetings and you are most welcome to attend ones outside your own region, just contact the organiser.

In Europe our German members are meeting in Munich from 7 to 9 March, our Belgian members are meeting on 26 April and our Swiss members are holding a reception at Bernaba on 14 May 2025.

Mike Roberts

Many of you will have joined on-line to attend Mike’s funeral last month. The family have very generously made the RPSL the Charity of choice for donations in Mike’s memory and have asked us to put the monies raised to support youth philately, a subject close to Mike’s heart.

I am pleased to be able to confirm that we are now confident we can deliver the Presidential Display Mike intended on 22 May 2025, and the day will be very much a tribute to Mike. Please do ‘save the date’.

With best wishes

Simon.

Collections Events

From time to time informal talks and seminars take place, showing the diversity of philately and how it can provide unexpected insights into social, cultural and local history. Click here for information about these events.

Meeting Videos

5pm meetings that have been videoed may be viewed on YouTube, accessible through links on the All Meetings with Documents page.

The full list of meetings can be viewed here.

Meeting Handouts

Our archives hold over 700 handouts provided by displayers at meetings since 1918. These range from single sheets of paper listing the items on display to extensive publications including complex images that can be regarded as significant contributions to the literature. Explanatory notes were at first provided only occasionally but have become normal practice since the 1980s. Many contain material of value to researchers and their production quality has steadily improved. These have been scanned and converted to searchable PDF documents. Click here for a list of the handouts available to view online.

Our Stand at Stampex International 2024

The Society's stand at Stampex, which was a 4-day event from 23rd to 26th October, was a popular spot to purchase many of our publications, and for visitors to chat with us about philately. We also welcomed a number of people who applied to join the Society. A short YouTube video about our stand at the show can be viewed here.

Fake stamps being sold by rogue firms in Britain

Chris Harman RDP, Hon FRPSL, Past President of the Royal Philatelic Society London and Chairman of the Expert Committee, met with Matthew Allwright, BBC Watchdog presenter, and helped confirm that some stamps sold by a Post Office were fake, and that a stamp that Royal Mail had identified as being a fake was actually genuine.

This was as part of a BBC Watchdog programme on the subject of how there has been a rise in complaints that stamps bought from legitimate stores are being deemed to be counterfeit, and anyone receiving a letter with a fake stamp is charged £5 by Royal Mail.

You can watch the key parts of the programme on YouTube here.
