1975 Gustaf Douglas Selected Five Covers Never to Sell
Usage of Official Stamps outside Sweden (or Norway which was in a union with Sweden at the time
being) are extremely rare. This cover is franked with 24 Öre yellow orange + 12 Öre blue on blue‐greyish
paper = 36 Öre, mailed from STOCKHOLM 12.4.1874 to Philadelphia in the United States (arrival post‐
mark on reverse). The 36 Öre rate to the United States was established on 26 June 1873 (and in force
until 30 June 1875) for mail sent in Swedish‐American letter pouch if sent via Gothenburg and England
or via Denmark and Germany by way of Hamburg or Bremen. The cover bears the marking “VIA D&T”
meaning via D(enmark) and T(yskland = Germany). There are very few covers with official stamps to
destinations outside Sweden and Norway. This cover once belonged to Bengt Rapp’s collection.
