8. Control Marks
The Postmaster at \Vheeling, VA applied a control marking to part or all of the flrst shipment of
stamps he received on August 8, 1847 (5~- 3,400 / 1W - 1,300). A red seven-bar circular grid was
applied to the center of each of the 25 blocks in the sheet. A second shipment of stamps was
received in Wheeling on November 28, 1849 but none have a control mark applied.
Because all recorded stamps with these marks also bear another cancellation- as displayed by the
covers below- experts believe that it is a control mark and not a precancel.

Three Wheeling grid control marks are recorded on 5~ covers between
JA 22 and FE 27,1848 and on 10~ covers from SE 1,1847 and MR 2,1848.
