Restoration Period Letters carried within Scotland
Following the Restoration in 1660, the Scottish Privy Council started to consider developing
postal services within Scotland. In 1662 a route was opened between Edinburgh and Glasgow
and on to Port Patrick. However no services were provided north of Edinburgh until 1667.
All letters to or from places north of Edinburgh were carried by private messenger, carrier or by
Burgh Posts.
