1680 - The 'from Aire' Manuscript Town Mark
-tt1 June 1680. Letter from Ayr to Rotterdam via Edinburgh and London. It would
have been charged 7d Sterling paid, being 2d (2s Scots) Ayr to Edinburgh and 5d
Edinburgh to London. Pre-payment was required for all letters to Holland. The
letter is endorsed 'from Aire'. This was added by the Post Office but it is not
known whether at Ayr or at Edinburgh.
Post Office endorsements of this type are among the first town marks to appear
on Scottish letters, although very few are recorded.
The letter is also endorsed, probably at the Edinburgh Letter Office:
'pd to Lond 5d'
The 'X/' in red was the charge in stuivers applied on the Continent and paid by
the recipient in Rotterdam.
