MULTAN DISTRICT
SHUJABAD
The surcharge employed at Multan is unusual not only because it shows the new currency alone
preceded by a decimal point but also that in one of its two recorded settings the word "Paisa"
does not align with the figures of the value. It has been plausibly suggested that two discrete
handstamps were used; one for the figures and the other for thee letters. Although this would
have been very cumbersome it explains the odd appearance of the surcharge and some peculiar
varieties which have been recorded.
Found in violet on both Ordinary and Service stamps, the handstamp has been recorded with the
postmarks ofMultan, Multan Kutchery, Matoth, Jalalpur Pirwala, Shujabad, Shahpur Ubba,
Camp POL 404, Reformatory Farms Burewala, Dawoodabad and Vihari from early 1961 to
October 1962.
