THE 1887 TWO VERTICALLY OVERLAPPING SINGLES

THESE TWO HAVE THE DEEPEST COLOURING FOUND

                             LOWER STAMP UPPER STAMP

These stamps show very dense application of the ink throughout.
There is occasional weakness along linear edges, where there can be lighter areas.

These studies show that variations in colour are due to

                                          (1) Variations of pigment content in the ink
                              (2) Bleeding into the gaps in the design, only serious in late printings
                                   (3) The stamps are produced by handstamping in this case
                                       (4) Variations in pressure applied during stamping

                                                                                                                   9
