To facilitate distribution and use of the imperforate stamps, postmasters would cut the
sheets into horizontal strips, and then cut vertically between the stamps, leaving a small bit
still attached. In this way, they could quickly and easily separate one or more stamps from
the strip by pulling apart the stamps.
