          Rates to Australian destinations dropped as volume grew. Steamers were canying the mail and freight to destination in
          less than halfthe time oftwenty years prior.  A 9d rate via Marseilles was established 13 January, 1857. The Victorian
          gold rush in the 1850s and 1860s significantly increased both the population and wealth of the colony.
