SWEDEN 1856 THE 1 SKILLING BANCO BLACK LOCAL STAMP
The Local Letter rate
The local letter rate was 1 Skilling Banco and was changed to 3 Öre after the monetary reform effective from
1 July 1858. The “1 Skilling Banco Black Local Stamp” was in use until the “3 Öre Provisional Stamp of Local Stamp
Type” was released from 1 January 1862.
The delivery hand‐

on reverse.
1 Skilling Banco Local Letter rate 19.7.1856 with prepaid delivery fee 1 Skilling Banco. The fee was split
between the post clerk (1 Skilling Banco) and the mailman (1 Skilling Banco). On mail with prepaid
delivery fee “betaldt” (paid) should be marked on the letter (not marked in this case).

office to Rydboholm Castle, located near
the village of Rydbo in Österåker Muni‐
cipality, Stockholm County.
Rydboholm Castle had a private mail‐
bag (lösväska ‐ still in existence (photo)
and the property of the collector’s
family) for mail to and from the castle
from the city of Stockholm, explaining
why this letter was entitled to
the privilege of the local letter
rate 1 Skilling Banco (and was
not charged the full inland
letter rate).
