SWEDEN 1862-1866 THE LYING LION TYPE
Pehr Olof Bagge’s revised design Pehr Ambjörn Sparre’s plates Type I and Type II
Colour Die Proofs Since P.A. Sparre objected to the accepted design
made by P.O. Bagge, the whole manufacturing
process was heaily delayed. The new stamps had to be
released and available at the local post offices from
1 December, 1862. Probably a very displeased
P.A. Sparre had to produce the printing plates from
P.O. Bagges accepted design. Due to the delay, Sparre
had to work under hard time pressure. His first die
(type O) was refused and a new die (type I) was made.
With more time available, Sparre probably would
have made a third die already on that stage, but he
didn’t have enough time.
