Monaco was not integrated into the French postcode system until 1982 when it was allocated the
number 98 as if it were a French departement. In the meantime, coding desk operators treating
mail destined for the principality gave it the code 06 belonging to the neighbouring French
departementof Alpes-Maritimes. Upon arrival at Nice, the mail was redirected to Monte-Carlo.
