CLERMONT-FERRAND
The first automatic sorting office in the provinces was installed at Clermont-Ferrand. From June
1971 to 9 October 1974 it operated using the P.L.M. language and initially treated only mail
posted within the dipartement of Puy-de-Dome (63) of which it was the chef-lieu and mail
posted in the contiguous dipartementsof Allier (03), Cantal (15) and Haute-Loire (43).
Test mail coded, from left to right, 63 DUR (Durtol in Puy-de-Dome), 77 VVV (Melun. chef- lieu
of Seine-et-Marne,- a malfunction resulting in an incomplete indexation and a double indexation
one of wh ich reads 63 ISS (Issoire in Puy-de-Dome). The tests were conducted on 2 September
1971 on coding desk N° 08 the ident of which is visible below the indexation.
