Rates:
Traquair to Edinburgh: Probably earned privately
Edinburgh to London: 5 pence (Sterling)
London to Bath 3 pence (Sterling)
Postal Markings:
'2s' Scottish rate deleted (this could be the rate for Peebles to Edinburgh but more likely
was to account for the Edinburgh to Berwick rate), '5d' Edinburgh to London rate deleted in
London and the 3d London to Bath rate added. Endorsed 'In A/18'.
The oval Edinburgh Bishop mark (JU/1) shows how the handstamp, constructed in two
halves inserted separately, occasionally resulted in a misalignment. The London Bishop
mark (JU/7) contrasts with this in being circular and constructed in one piece.
The letter, dated 31st May 1706, is written by Lady Traquair at
Traquair House, who signs herself 'Mary Traquaire'. She was a '
noted beauty of the age. She and her husband were devout Roman i.
Catholics and both were strong supporters of the House of Stuart.
