Internal Postal Rates set by the Scottish Privy Council
1686 - Edinburgh to Aberdeen 3 Shillings Rate
The Scottish Privy Council's postal rate scale of 1669 had been fully implemented by the
1680's and the Edinburgh to Aberdeen single letter rate was established at 3 shillings
Scots:
From 40 to 60 miles (Scots): 31- (Scots) single; 41- (Scots) double; 51- (Scots) ounce
9th September 1686. This single, unpaid letter from Edinburgh to
Aberdeen is charged 3d (Ster1ing) equivalent to 3 shillings (Scots) in
accordance with the Scottish Privy Council's 1669 rate scale. At this
date, few letters were sent internally in Scotland by the official Post.
It is interesting that the manuscript charge is specified in sterling
despite the fact that the letter was carried within Scotland and might
have been expected to have been charged in Scots currency.
