1697 - Edinburgh to Linlithgow 2 Shillings Rate
Linlithgow was below 50 Scottish miles from Edinburgh and so fell within the 2 shillings
Scots rate band for single letters from Edinburgh as per the 1695 Act of the Scottish
Parliament.
19th June 1697. Edinburgh to Linlithgow unpaid letter
at the 2 shillings (Scots) rate. Interestingly, Edinburgh
Letter Office applied the rate in sterling '2d', a
practice that they used occasionally.
The letter is addressed to the 'provost of the Burgh
of Linlithgow'.
