1700-The '2d GI' Manuscript Town Mark on letter endorsed 'Gon to Glasgow'
At the end of the 171h Century and early in the 181h Century, an abbreviated town name and
charge appears on the reverse of some letters. As with the previous manuscript town
names written in full, it is uncertain whether these manuscript town marks were applied at
the originating town or when the tetter passed through Edinburgh's Letter Office.
1otn April 1700. Glasgow to Edinburgh, with the abbreviated town name 'GI' for Glasgow
and '2d' rate (as per the Act of the Scottish Parliament, 1695).
