Internal Postal Rates set by the 1695 Act of the Scottish Parliament

                                     1704 & 1705 - Edinburgh to Lochmaben 2 Shillings Rate





                         The  1695 Act of the  Scottish  Parliament  set the  rate  up  to  50  Scots  miles  at 2  shillings
                         Scots for a single letter.  Lochmaben was computed to be within 50 miles of Edinburgh.
                         Lochmaben Post Office was opened in or before 1704.

                                                                                  unpaid letter charged 2 shillings Scots.
                                                                                 This letter is  so far the earliest evidence of
                                                                                  there being a postal service to Lochmaben.

              the  2s  unpaid  rate.  The  writer,  William
              Veitch,  has  included  sufficient  direction  in
              the  address  to  enable  the  Post  Office  to
              deliver it safely and without undue delay:
