Internal Postal Rates set by the 1695 Act of the Scottish Parliament
1708 - Edinburgh to Ayr 2 Shillings Rate
The 1695 Act of the Scottish Parliament set the rate up to 50 Scots miles at 2 shillings
Scots for a single letter. Although Ayr was 73 Scottish miles (80 modern miles) from
Edinburgh, the 'romputed' distance used by the Post Office was below 50 Scottish miles
and so letters to Ayr were charged only 2 shillings Scots. Ayr was at the limit of the two
shillings rate and letters sent to offices beyond Ayr were charged three shillings Scots.
