Wartime Service to North America
13 October 1943 - Freetown to Dayton, USA.
The Pan American Airlines FAM 22 service operated between Miami and Leopoldville. Stops in West Africa
included Lagos and Bathurst. Fewer than ten examples of wartime air mail letters to North America have been
recorded from Sierra Leone and these are all paid at 5s 1d, the earliest being 21 February 1942. No official report
of the rate has been discovered, but the Gazette entry dated 6 February almost certainly announces this service.
