1893 Halfpenny Provisional Overprint.
On 1 October 1892 the cost of sending newspapers to the United Kingdom was reduced to ½d. This led to
an increase in the use of ½d stamps, and the authorities made local arrangements to ensure that stocks were
not exhausted by overprinting the under-used 1½d value. There was significant philatelic speculation in this
issue, with commercially used wrappers being particularly scarce.
23 March 1893 - Freetown to Great Yarmouth, England. HALF PENNY overprinted stamp paying the 2 oz printed paper rate.

A local overprint of 12,780 stamps was authorised on the 1½d stamps already in stock. It is believed that just
eight of the 213 sheets overprinted had the Crown CC watermark, with the majority being Crown CA.
