Scouting Around the World                                    United States

USS Macon (ZRS-5) was a ri gid airship built and operated by the United States Navy for scouting.
Macon ' s first fli ght was on 21 Apri l 1933. She served as a fl yin g aircraft carrier, launching
Sparrowhawk biplanes. In service for less than two years, on 12 February 1935 Macon was damaged
in a storm and lost off Ca li fornia ' s Big Sur coast. 81 of the 83 aboard the Macon survived th e crash.

U.S.S. Macon 's trainin g fli ght from Lakehurst on 13 September 1933 was com me-
morated by three different cachets sponsored by the Sea Scout Ship " Alli ance", belonging
to the Boy Scouts of Amer ica. I07 covers were prepared for the pass ing of Ardsley on
Hudson , N.Y ., I00 covers for West Po int, N.Y. and only 50 covers for Yonkers, N.Y.
