Scouting Around the World Egypt
The 2nd Pan-Arab Scout Jamboree took place in Aboukir near Alexandria, Egypt in July-A ugust 1956. The stamps,
souvenir sheets and first day covers are well known to Scout stamp co llectors since they were issued back in 1956.
What was not known until 2009 is that an Alexandra machine cancel with advertisin g slogan was in use in
Alexandri a around the time of the Jamboree. In 20 16, a similar machine cance l was discovered , used in Cairo.
The slogan is in Arab only, and this mu st be one of the reasons why Sco ut coll ectors have been unaware of these
postmarks for over 50 years. Translation of slogan: Arab Scout Jamboree I at Aboukir I from 2517 to 3/8/1956.
Right: The only recorded
item with the 1956 Scout
machine cancel used in
Cairo.
