Booklets containing five coupon s were prepared and so ld fo r one Mexican do ll ar.
Mexican Eagle Dollars took over from Spani sh coloni al Portrait Dollars as the monetary
un it for bookkeeping in the Chinese commerc ial soc iety from 1856 onward s. The
Mexican Dollars were only driven o ut from Chi na in 1933 by the Nati onali st government
when they monopo li sed the minting of si lver coi ns.

Each coupon cost 20 cents and entitled the bearer to post one letter up to one ounce in
weight. The coupons are approx. 83x63mm, and have a pink background consisting of
the word ing "emergency posta l service shanghai" (no cap itals) repeated twice and
mak in g eight column s of wordi ng. In an uncolo ured panel in the centre is the wordi ng
" GOOD FOR ONE LETTER OF ONE OUNCE" in green capitals.

The E.P. S. functioned fo r six days, and during thi s period 16,2 10 coupons were so ld.
11 bags of mail we ighin g a total of 358 lbs. were despatched, consisting of 4,536 letters,
225 packets, and 70 I registered letters and packets.
