Jamaica: The Vendryes Provisional
Earliest known use.
This 4 June 1890 cover is the earliest known date of use of the 2½d provisional. Addressed to a
known philatelist, it may be a deliberate first day cover, and 4 June is usually given as the date of
issue. This is not strictly proven, but the date must be close because the decision to overprint 4d
stamps was only taken on 30 May, 5 days before.
2½d provisionals used on a formular registered letter from Kingston to England, 4 June 1890.
A pair of 2½d provisionals from setting one, position (row) 2, with a single 3d postal fiscal.
8d rate (4d postage and 4d registration).
Jamaica registered (Kingston): 4 June 1890.
Manchester registered: 20 June 1890.
Ex Swarbrick.
