The Arawaks were a tribe of South American Indians who inhabited the island at the time of discovery.
The Arawaks were entirely peaceful,
but half a million were completely exterminated within 60 years of first contact with Europeans.
The stamp depicts an Arawak woman making Cassava, a kind of tapioca, in front of her hut.
Die Proofs
The frame was modified for the second printing to incorporate the legend “Postage & Revenue”.
