Jamaica Defence: World War II Canadian Forces.

Canadian regiments took over garrison duty in Jamaica from British regiments in 1940. Four
successive Canadian units, designated “Y” Force, were posted there until 1946. Each undertook its
own censorship, but their mail passed through the Jamaica post office, at first at full rates.

US forces from 1941 enjoyed concessionary postage rates. The Highlanders’ commanding officer
successfully pressed for postage concessions for his men. From April 1942 Canadian troops were
allowed free surface mail to Canada and from May their airmail rate to Canada was reduced to 6d.
