1961 DECIMAL OVERPRINTS
At the time of Decimalisation it was necessary to educate the general public about the new
currency. Conversion tables were published by the Government and various commercial bodies.
In the examples shown below it is interesting to note that 2 Annas is represented as 12 Paisa and
2 Annas 1 Pie as 13 Paisa. A strict conversion would show 2 Annas being equivalent to 12Yl
Paisa. This explains the largest problem for the Postal Authorities, given that the single Inland
Rate was 2 Annas. A 13 Paisa overprint was applied by Times Press, but confusion led some of
the local offices to use a 12 Paisa handstamp.
"Ready Reckoner for Conversion into Decimal Currency with the Compliments of National and Grindlays Bank
Limited (Karachi)". The reverse of the cards advertises the bank's interest rates offered to depositors .
