2.3 Wartime Airmail to Rest of World
2.3.1 Australasia
With the fall of Singapore in March 1942 QANTAS, who operated the southern part of the Empire Route of behalf
of BOAC, suspended the service. There was no airmail route available to Australasia until 15 March 1944 when
CNAC commenced flights to Calcutta. Initially mail went south by surface from Calcutta, but on 25 April 1946 the air
service was recommenced to Australia. On 25 August 1946 the use of Calcutta as a transit point ceased when the
post‑war direct mail service from Hong Kong to Australia commenced.
