Union Hotel & Coffee House
Cockspur Street, Pall Mall
(1801 - 1843)
The Union Hotel is described in 1803 thus: "This house is conducted by a
person appointed by the subscribers, and who provides dinners, etc, for
the members, who furnish their own wine. Frequented by English and
Irish gentlemen, who have formed themselves into a club. It is conducted
on a similar plan as other subscription houses, with a greater latitude
respecting diners". In 1804 a newspaper notes: "Gambling for heavy
stakes here. It was listed as the Union Hotel, Pall Mall in 1814 and in
Charing Cross in 1819 but from 1826 to 1832 the Union Hotel is shown
at 2, Cockspur Street to which address the co.ver below is addressed in
1843.

An embossed ld. Pink envelope posted in Salisbury on 13th October 1843 I
addressed to S Latimer Esq. at the Union Hotel, Cockspur Street which ,
in the manner of a free front has the signature of Wilson on the front. A
manuscript note on the reverse: "answered with circular - and wrote to
Sir C. Bullen on 24th October with circular".
