Will's Coffee Bouse
Lincoln's Inn
(1713-1840)
The earliest, but un-reliable, reference to this coffee house is in 1713 and
its location is variously described as: "near Lincoln's Inn"; "Lincoln's Inn
Field"; "Lincoln's Inn Gate"; "Back-side of Lincoln's Inn Square";
"facing the passage to Lincoln's Inn New Square"; "7, Serie St."; and
"l, Portugal St." Latterly, in 1822, James Green is recorded as the
proprietor ofthis coffee house and its name begins to evolve into Green's
Coffee House. In 1840 it is recorded as "Will's Coffee House and
Green's Hotel of 7 Serie St". It was frequented by gentlemen ofthe law.
A letter posted in Shiffnal, evidenced by a smart blue town mark, on 16th
January 1831 which arrived in London on the 18th. It was charged at l/8d
and clearly had a heavy enclosure.
