Forrest's Coffee House
near Charing Cross, opposite the Mews Gate
(1733 - 1758)
This Coffee House was sited directly opposite the entrance to the Royal
Mews which at this time at the end of the Strand and Charing cross. \
These Mews were re-built in 1732 (and taken down in 1830 and
relocated) and this appears to have been factor that caused this Coffee
House to open; first references to it appear in 1733. Throughout the 1730s
and 1740s it was used to hold masonic meetings. It was used for auctions
and in 1757 an advertisement appeared in Daily Advertiser asking "Any
person that has an Indian or Negro Boy to dispose of reasonably from 12
to 16 years old may hear of a purchaser by directing a line to R.P. At
Forrest's Coffee House"! The last reference to it was in 1758.
A letter written by a Mrs. Lundy seeking payment of debts due from the
Addressee, Capt. John Maitland of the 3r<l Regiment of Guards sent to him
at Forrest's Coffee House Charing Cross on 24th November 1746.
