Darling's Coffee House,
near Charing Cross
(1702 - 1703)
Little is known about this short-lived coffee house. It was known to exist
in 1702/3 and Lillywhite records another letter from Peckham dated 26th
January 1702 which was directed to Mr. Jno Drummond "to be left at
Darling's Coffee House". The cover below, from Edinburgh, evidenced
by the rare bishop mark (ED3a) has exactly the same addressee and
additionally asks that the letter be forwarded on to Peckham and indicates
a similar date. Darling's Coffee House is recorded as issuing its own
Traders' tokens (for a farthing) that were seen more regularly in the
second half of the 17th Century.
A damaged cover posted on 6th March 1702 addressed to Mr. John
Drummond "to be found at Mr. Darling's Coffee House near Charing
Cross London" and it goes on "in his absence to be forwarded to Mr. ....
at Peckham in Surrey near London". The rare black Edinburgh bishop
mark (ED3a-in use from 1694 to 1714) and black London bishop mark
dated 12th March indicating its arrival in London.
