Craven Coffee House

(1800 - 1838)
It was variously described as Coffee-house; Hotel &Coffee House; and
Hotel. It was on the site of the Globe Tavern, Coffee House and Royal
Hummums which at one time was kept by a Daniel King and, later, by the
actor George Pack. The change from the Globe to Craven took place around
l 800and is listed in 1809-11 as Craven Hotel and Coffee House. By 1826 its
proprietor was Jos. Stevenson and in 1827 Stephen Tapster. From 1833 to
1838 Tapster & Son are shown as proprietors. The hotel was still in
existence in 1906.

A letter written in Colinton by Edward B Knight 16th May 1826 addressed to
Edward Mammett which arrived in London on the 18t\ at the Craven Hotel
which he had already left and the letter was forwarded to him in Ashby de la
Zouch in Leicestershire where it received a red Loughborough mileage mark
There is also a very faint red "Postage to London not paid" handstamp.
