Colonial Coffee House
                                   1, Skinner Street
                                      (1819 - 1867)

This Coffee House was located on the comer of Skinner Street and Fleet
Market. Skinner Street was constructed in 1802 to avoid the steep
winding ascent of Snow Hill. The Fleet Market which had been
established in 1737 was removed in 1829 and re-named Farringdon
Market. Fleet Market was re-named Farringdon Street which was
constructed in 1829 and Skinner Street was removed in 1867 for the
formation of Holbom Viaduct.

  A drawing by Thomas Shepherd entitled "Fleet Market from Holbom
  Bridge, now removed" about 1830 which depicts the Colonial Coffee
  House. on the comer ofthe Market and Skinner Street. A directory of
  1832 hsts a Coffee mart on the premises, indicating a combined coffee
 and coffee house business.
