Apollo 1 (AS-204) Apollo's Darkest Hour
Having failed to open the hatch, Grissom and White tried to shield themselves underneath the couches,
while Chaffee, furthest away from the fire, stayed in his couch to maintain communications. 'We've got
a bad fire. Let's get out. We're burning up .... ' The build-up in pressure split the capsule's hull, while in
the White Room the technicians saw movements through the small hatch window; a white helmet fol-
lowed by the flash of a flame. It was over so quickly, with just fourteen seconds between the first cry of
alarm and the last. Firemen arrived within three minutes of the hatch opening, doctors soon thereafter.
