As Conrad and Bean began their first lunar walk on 19 November, Gordon encircled the Moon in Yankee
Clipper. Because of the accuracy of the landing he was able to pinpoint their position and excitedly in-
formed Mission Control. 'I have Intrepid.' Then, spotting a second point of light: 'I see Surveyor! I see
Surveyor. That's almost as good as being there.'
Gordon had a better view than the television audience back home because Bean had inadvertently pointed
the camera directly at the Sun, wrecking the vidicom tube. From that point onwards this would be a sound
-only show.
