Auxiliary Handstamps Delayed Delivery
“L in circle.” January 14, 1853. Carrickboy to London. The exact nature of
the handstamp is unknown, but is usually associated with letters delayed
in transit due to an insufficient address. By 1853, street addresses were
mandated to be used. This lack of a street address and the three London
datestamps indicate a possible delay, leading to the use of this handstamp.
