To the United States – Returned to London
Wisbeach, England; through Liverpool, and Boston, to Arena (state unspecified), USA.
Adhesives cancelled with five “897” numerals (contrary to regulations) with
corresponding “Wisbeach JY 8 1850” datestamp on the reverse.
Liverpool “JY 9” datestamps on front and the reverse.
Boston “Br Packet Boston, 24 JUL PAID”; red “24” rate, and “5 CENTS” exchange
office credit markings.
Adhesives paid the 1 shilling per ½ ounce treaty rate.
Traveled on the July 13, 1850 sailing of the Cunard Asia, arriving Boston July 23, 1850.
US retained 5¢ credit for inland postage.
Ten states had a town named “Arena” during the 18 century. There was a “Farmerville” in
th
Louisiana, but the post office there did not open until 1886. The likely ambiguity of the address
rendered the letter undeliverable and it was returned to London where the “SENT BACK TO
ENGLAND WITHOUT A REASON FOR NON-DELIVERY” handstamp was applied.
